Padre Pio forbid all diabolic 'magic', and that would include children's 'toys'

Padre Pio prohibited all 'magic' and fortune telling. In November 1948, Padre Pio heard a lady’s confession. The lady gave an account afterwards, ‘among the things I told him was that we were worried about our aunt who read Tarot cards in our family”. Padre Pio in a authoritative tone said: "Throw that stuff away, as soon as you can."
There is a lot of confusion among Catholics as to whether to buy 'magic' toys such as ouija boards and tarot card sets for their children. As Linen on the Hedgerow points out, buying 'toys' such as ouija boards over the internet has made it possible for people in our chilly islands to buy 'magic' toys from the US. The reason that I write 'magic' instead of just magic, is that really 'magic' is a nice-sounding, Disney-esque word that conjures up images of wands and magical fantasy castles; the stuff of fairy tales and fantasy. But diabolic 'magic' is real - where people believe that they will 'magically' get certain powers such as knowledge of the future (tarot cards) or in touch with the dead (ouija board). The majority of Catholics that I know who dabble/'experiment' in this stuff, have Never been told that it is not only dubious, but deeply dangerous. According to the documentary that was made of the possessed child who was the inspiration for the film The Exorcist, that child (in real life he was a boy) became possessed after he and his aunt played with a ouija board.
PS - The Microsoft word spell checker is putting red, squiggly lines under my uncapitalised spellings of 'ouija'. I'll have to write Bill (Gates/gates) a letter and tell him to make a 'Catholic Spell Checker' - then I'll be safe!

  1. Thank you for telling people this info. People have no idea what they open themselves up to. It is slick and evil and the devils love this inclusion. We must pray for those who have no idea, that Our Lady will somehow protect them and allow them to come upon something or someone who will alert them. St. Michael's Novena will help...and I'm doing that now...Praise God. Pat from Grass Valley, CA.

  3. Thanks Mary. Just a small note of clarification I feel might help to add: The regular mainstream magic as an entertainment form should not be confused with this. Coz that is skill (eg. card-tricks - sleight of hand or clever engineering used in illusion-shows). Fortune-telling, tarot cards, ouija board etc are dangerous precisely because they are / dabble in the occult (demonic). Sometimes it helps to name the enemy. Like St. Pio says - throw them out NOW and go for a good confession. The evil one who is, fro the begining, the father of all lies (John 8: 44) would like to package them as "toys" - so he can deceive us. After all, unlike the Lord, he has no respect for our free will.

  4. I work with a woman that is a self proclaimed Witch and she makes the hair on the back of my neck stand. Anyway, she is always after me about being Catholic and tells me how wrong I am. It's been rather difficult for me on a daily basis listening to her. Lately, I wear two blessed metals on my person, one of St. Miachel and the other being the Miraculous Medal. Interestingly enough, she does not say a word to me anymore and these medals are not even in public view and I never told a soul about them.

  5. Thank you ContraSign for your clarification. I would agree that 'magic' for entertainment such as card tricks or even juggling is an entirely different ball game to Horoscopes and Tarot Cards. I suppose my orginal point was that people let themselves believe that while they dabble in the demonic (ouija board etc) that it's as harmless as reading fairytales.

  6. It's so interesting how so often your blog hits me right where I am. I just watched The Exorcist for the first time two nights ago. What struck me the most was how tricky and confusing the devil could be...and how he benefits from disguises and confusion.

  7. "Ouija" boards are NOT "toys" - they are extremely dangerous spiritually and should never be touched by anyone - even those who "know what they are doing". Evil forces know what they are doing much more than we do! I have seen all kinds of nasty thing happen after messing about with these sorts of things and only a priest can usually make things right again. "Fortune telling" is rubbish - I have many examples of this nonsense too. Only
G-d knows the future and all things can change by His will and out own free will. The future is not static or immutable.

  8. @ Anon: That's fantastic! Coz like St. Teresa of Avila says - "The evil one's is afraid of one drop if Holy Water"!

  9. People don't realize that the movie The Exorcist is based on a true story. The person possessed was a boy whose aunt would use tarrot cards and ouji board. As Father Etennier(an exorcist) states, these are gateways. He also states that movies such as Harry Potter and Twilight are dangerous in that they make the black arts look appealing. Satan always makes evil look appealing. Children are so impressionable. Have you noticed how dark children's books have become?

  10. Yes, Mary, I've seen some children's books that are very 'dark' - and we wonder why children are turned off reading!?

Another nugget about The Exorcist is that in real life the family were Protestant, and were told by a Protestant minister that they would have to bring their possessed child to a Catholic priest...

  11. As anonymous said, Saint Michael's medal would be good. I have tried the ouja board once with friends, and I must say it was like fighting an addiction... I was constantly thinking of trying it again, I mean how awesome is it to handle spirits, but my mother was firm about never doing it again, especially not in our house. I didn't anymore, and my friends maybe still do, they are not religious. I went lately for the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, I just did that three time in my life, when I was a child, just watching other people kneeling with no idea what was going on, once this years was my first good time, it was appeasing, but then I fell back into that emptiness two days later, and the third time, that third time I found a medal, a HUUUUGE medal of Saint Michael! but I never wore it, still, I think I should, and I should confess the ouja board thing, I didn't know it was that evil and undesired by the church! but I still think it was suspicious to find that medal...why was it there, just waiting? I have a Miraculous Medal around my neck, maybe I should add the Archangel one?

  12. Yes, Fallen Elendil, I would also wear a medal of St. Michael the Archangel. His image struck on metal is powerful!

I also want to buy a t-shirt of St. Michael the Archangel.

  13. I should buy a t-shirt that says I Love Vatican... it would be a nice change from all the I love NY and I Love Paris t-shirt... and it would be a way of making some point, like "I'm Catholic and Proud" ^_^, anyway, let us not move away from the subject! Great blog Mary...especially the Padre Pio posts!! Thank you.

  14. I would like to know the source, e. g. book, where this information is situated: "In November 1948, Padre Pio heard a lady’s confession. The lady gave an account afterwards, ‘among the things I told him was that we were worried about our aunt who read Tarot cards in our family”. Padre Pio in a authoritative tone said: "Throw that stuff away, as soon as you can."" Thank you!

    1. Dear Tea, Thank you so much for your inquiry. Alas, I got this from an internet website and have been looking for a source in a book which I can cite for my own book. I am in touch with a priest who knew someone who was told the same as this lady, but they were a different person entirely, so there is a chain of consistency here, Pio telling people who have no relation to each other the same advice. I believe the source will be Giuseppe Pagnossin who wrote Il Calvario di Padre Pio. I have not been able to afford my own copy, I have spent much money getting rare books on Pio from Italy, but it is only when I have scrounged to put a bit by that I can pay for one.

Also, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I've had an all-consuming summer. God bless you and thank you for your patience, Mary
