AILI WHELAN: "A MULTI-FACETED GEM OF A BIOGRAPHY"

Library Staff | Yonkers Public Library

Catherine Collins is the gift that keeps on giving. She introduced me to Aili several years ago and I've become friends with this intrepid daughter of the state of New York, and also spiritual daughter of Padre Pio. Aili gave me the great gift of this review

Many have heard of Padre Pio, but this lovely book enables the reader to know and love this saint! Mary O'Regan skillfully incorporates diverse strands in her narrative, edifying the reader in several ways.

First, this is a meticulously researched and detailed account of Padre Pio's entire life, from cradle to grave. His sufferings, his struggles, and his accomplishments are laid out, with appropriate historical context and in chronological order. As a librarian, I appreciate the footnotes and the wide array of primary sources used.

Secondly, O'Regan's descriptions of the very human drama of Padre Pio's friends, enemies, relations, and converts who come and go in his life shows the very personal relationships Padre Pio had (and has) with his spiritual children. O'Regans vivid descriptions of all these characters prevented any confusion for the reader.

Thirdly, when presented with a life of such heroic virtue, readers may feel far removed from such a life (or feel that their attempts to imitate such virtues are woefully inadequate). Like a wise elder sister, O'Regan encourages the reader with suggestions for the inner spiritual life: prayer intentions, meditations, and practical applications of Padre Pio's lessons interspersed throughout the book.

This was one of the best saint biographies I have read, and I am sure I will revisit it again and again, finding new insghts and inspiration from this wonderful saint, described by one who knows and loves him well.
